Description

(first cited 1226, rebuilt 1586, extended 1849)

The church of Santa Maria stands in the centre of the Mechel settlement in a raised position dominating the central square. It was cited for the first time in a parchment from 1226.

The building fell under the authority of the Pieve di Cles after the Mechel territory was assigned to the same at least from 1128, as indicated in a document preserved in the archives of the church of Nanno.

In 1579 Cardinal Ludovico Madruzzo ordered the demolition and rebuilding of the old church. The new building was consecrated on 12 May 1586. It replicated the forms of the arcipretal church of  Cles on a smaller scale, with a single wide barrel-vaulted nave decorated with late Gothic ribbing.
