Caltron Suburb

The medieval village of Calton lies on the far side of the Rio Dres valley, in the middle of gentle slopes rising up to the steeper mountainside.

This natural terrace offers an impressive view over the area and is ideal for settlement due to the easy cultivation of the fields and sunny position.

It is also connected to the Val di Sole road that transits just below, providing a valid alternative way to cross the Rio Dres at a higher level. Once, when goods were still transported with oxen, people were very careful not to lose height because climbing back up was time consuming and required enormous effort. This settlement has maintained the closest ties with the mountains, spread out around the junction between the road to Val di Sole and the road to Lavendon (a location cited as early as 1355). Here we find the  little church of Santa Lucia  and thanks to this fortunate combination of factors it remains a  very well centred settlement to this day. Just uphill of the village there used to be another simple 1600s church dedicated to San Giuseppe (built on private initiative), originally greatly venerated it was later progressively abandoned. In was demolished in 1808, partly due to a great new enthusiasm among the faithful for the “miraculous” Sant del Chiatar. The houses in Caltron are rural in style  and the  marvellous rustic facades  visible as you climb up from the bridge is a real  symbol of historic-popular architecture
