Description

(first mentioned 1255, renovated 1537)

The castle was first mentioned in a document from 1255 and has always belonged to the noble family of Signori di Castel Cles. For centuries it has been an impressively distinctive feature in the local Cles landscape, standing on a promontory that once overlooked the Noce River and now the Lake of Santa Giustina, about a kilometre from Cles town centre. The old road ran below the castle, crossed the River Noce, continuing on to Revò and “de là de l’aca” (from a popular song: "beyond the bridge"). The castle comprises an integration of various structures from different periods. The ground plan is roughly triangular, enclosed with double defensive walls. After passing through the first three gates you arrive at the main door, decorated with a carved Cles coat of arms dated 1597, affording access to the central courtyard.
