Description

One, two, three, ... take a deep breath. You are on the "Croz dele Bonele" with its breathtaking view over the valley and local capital. From here you can see the town of Cles, its historic suburbs, castle, Santa Giustina Lake, and Val di Non.

The "Croz dele Bonele" Viewpoint also offers the opportunity to spot numerous species of birds, including various diurnal raptors.

Among these is the buzzard, a very common diurnal bird of prey nesting in Val di Non, easily identifiable for the conformation of its wings during flight (raised and pointing slightly forwards), its medium size, and characteristic pale “U” shape on its chest when sitting or observed close up. They hunt voles, mice, birds, and reptiles and can be observed throughout the year. They are usually quite vocal, making an extended whistling call with a falling tone. The  honey buzzard  is a long distance migrator and resembles the buzzard. They are specialized in hunting social hymenopterans (bees, wasps, and hornets) and nest in the high canopy forests around S. Giustina Lake, and up to 1200 m a.s.l. in the forests of Faè, Vergondola, and above Mechel. They can be spotted from the viewpoint in the months between May and September, but overwinter in Africa during the other months. Throughout the year it is possible to hear the  calls of owls when night falls. These nocturnal raptors nest in cavities in rocks and trees or in ruined buildings. The  nightjar  is perhaps the least well known bird around Cles. Nocturnal in habits and resembling tree bark, they nest on the ground among plants and in clearings in some broad-leafed woods.  While difficult to spot , they are very  easy to hear between May and August when they sing with a very extended wavering call resembling a puffing breath or a cat purring. They can be heard at the  Vergondola, in some pine woods in the area of  Maso Keller,  San Vito,  and other areas near "Croz dele Bonele"  and  Acqua Marcia. In flight they resemble falcons.
